Salary Negotiation Scripts That Do Not Feel Awkward

June 18, 2026 · 8 min read

When asked for expectations early: 'I would rather understand the scope first. Do you have a band for this role?' This returns the question without refusing to answer.

When you receive an offer: thank them, ask for it in writing, and request time. 'Thank you, I am excited. Could you send the written details so I can review properly by Thursday?'

When you counter: anchor on market evidence and the value you bring, not on personal need. Name one number, not a range.

If the base is fixed, negotiate the rest: signing bonus, review timing, title, holiday, remote days, or a development budget.
